World Soil Day (WSD) is held annually on 5 December as a means to focus attention
on the importance of healthy soil and to advocate for the sustainable management of soil resources.
An international day to celebrate Soil was recommended by the International Union of Soil Sciences
(IUSS). This day was recognized by the 68th UN General Assembly in 2013 and is annually celebrated
since then. According to the UN, a third of the earth's soils are already degraded."Soil pollution may be
invisible, but it harms everyone and everything.
By 2050, the planet's population may reach 9 billion. As the population grows, the soil becomes more
and more polluted."It affects the food we eat, the water we drink and the air we breathe," the UN
website said. On World Soil Protection Day, various events are held to raise public awareness about
soil protection.
World Soil Protection Day is celebrated annually at the Georgian Academy of Agricultural Sciences.
The main goal of this year's campaign is to define the directions of soil biodiversity protection policy
and to introduce methods for increasing soil biodiversity.
