September 6 International Day for the Protection of the Ozone Layer
The idea of International Days lies in mobilizing the educational community, political will and resources to solve global problems.
In addition, it serves to celebrate and strengthen the achievements of humanity. The United Nations has recognized International Days as a powerful tool for raising public awareness.
Ozone is a very small part of our atmosphere, but its existence is extremely important for human well-being. Most of the ozone is located in the upper atmosphere, 10 to 40 km above the Earth's surface. This area is called the stratosphere and contains about 90% of all atmospheric ozone.
In 1985, world governments adopted the Vienna Convention on the Protection of the Ozone Layer.
Under the Montreal Protocol to that Convention, governments, scientists, and industrialists of different countries collectively restricted the use of 99 percent of ozone-depleting substances. A protocol was then developed in Montreal which aims to restore the ozone layer and reach the level of the 1980s by the middle of the century.
This year, world humanity is celebrating the 36th anniversary of the Vienna Convention and the Protection of the Ozone Layer. Life on earth is unimaginable without the sun's rays. But the energy released by the sun would be very deadly to the inhabitants of the earth, if not the ozone layer.
This layer of the stratosphere protects the earth from most of the sun's harmful ultraviolet radiation. Solar energy gives life, but the ozone layer keeps us alive.
"Holes" were created by ozone depleting gases (ODS) used in aerosols and refrigeration systems, in air conditioners. These substances not only pose a threat to the ozone layer, but also adversely affect living organisms. They cause skin cancer and cataracts, at the same time damaging the entire ecosystem.
The pandemic period has made it clear that the introduction of collective solutions and action based on scientific knowledge is the only way to resolve global crises. The message about the protection of the ozone layer has become even more important at this point than ever before.
Ozone is crucial to the existence of life on Earth and we must continue to protect the ozone layer in order to preserve it for future generations.
On the occasion of the International Ozone Day, we offer an article by Dr. Revaz Lolishvili, Academic Secretary of the Scientific Departments of the Georgian Academy of Agricultural Sciences - "Save the sky - protect yourself, protect the ozone layer" (see the article at the link).
