World Science Day for Peace and Development –is celebrated at Georgian Academy of Agricultural Sciences
On the 9th of November, 2018, an extended meeting of the Presidium of Georgian Academy of Agricultural Sciences was held dedicated to World Science Day for Peace and Development which was founded by UNESCO in 1999. The first scientific conference dedicated to this day was held in Hungary, Budapest. Celebrated every 10 November, World Science Day for Peace and Development highlights the important role of science for society, and the need to engage the wider public in debates on emerging scientific issues. It also underlines the importance and relevance of science in our daily lives.
By linking science more closely with society, World Science Day for Peace and Development aims to ensure that citizens are kept informed regarding the progress in science. It also underscores the role the scientists plays in broadening our understanding about our wonderful, fragile planet which we call “our home”, and in promoting sustainable development of the world society.
The Meeting was also attended by the representatives of researchers, experts, consultants, graduate and doctorate students working in agrarian field.
The Meeting was opened by Vice President of the Academy Academician Givi Japaridze. In his presentation he focused on the role of science in development of the country and from this point of view, he highlighted main directions of scientific activity carried out by the Academy, such as, regional projects, practical recommendations, investment projects, monographs and fundamental researches, participation of the GAAS in scientific projects outlined by the Ministry of Agriculture of Georgia as a chief consultant, and other.
Well recognized academicians Tamaz Kunchulia, Gogola Margvelashvili, Omar Keshelashvili, Elguja Shapakidze addressed the audience and talked about the achievements of world agrarian science, and among them accomplishments of Georgian agrarians in different fields of agriculture.
