March 21 - International Forest Day

On March 21 of this year, in the Academy of Agricultural Sciences, organized by the Department of Environmental Protection and Forestry Sciences, a thematic session was held: "Invasive pest-diseases spread in the forests of Adjara and the consequences of their negative effects", which was dedicated to the International Forest Day.

Academician Lasha Dolidze, Academician-Secretary of the Department of Environmental Protection and Forestry Sciences, Academician Lasha Dolidze, Head of the Academic Department of the Academy, Doctor of Agriculture Marine Barvenashvili, Chairman of the Council of Young Scientists and Specialists of the Academy, Scholar of the Academy, Doctor of Forestry Giorgi Kavtaradze, Professor of the Technical University, Academy Scholar, Doctor of Agriculture Zviad Tiginashvili, Professor of Agrarian University, Doctor of Biology Medea Burjanadze, Head of the Department of Combating Pests of Forests of the Forestry Agency, Doctor of Agriculture Rezo Vasadze,

At the session, Dr. R. gave a report on "Invasive pest-diseases spread in the forests of Adjara and the consequences of their negative effects". Vasadze. The speaker noted that according to the latest data, 1,837 species of wild young trees and plants are recorded in Adjara at different heights above sea level, among them 177 - woody.

It was noted that in the last period in the forests of Adjara is in a very poor condition, which is attacked by a fungal disease. The causative agent of boxwood "burn" is a pathogenic fungus.

A discussion was held after the report. A number of questions were asked by the listeners, to which Dr. R. Vasadze gave exhaustive answers.

At the thematic session, the books: "Invasion of foreign woody plants in the forest habitats of the protected areas of Georgia" (authors: G. Kavtaradze, L. Basiladze, E. Avoyani, etc.) and "The causes of the deterioration of the general sanitary condition of the pine groves of Adjara and the dynamics of forestry taxation indicators" According to forest types (authors: R. Vasadze, Z. Vasadze) presentation-discussion.

Regarding the first paper, Dr. G. presented to the audience. Kavtaradze, and then Dr. R. spoke about the book. Vasadze.

Both works aroused great interest from the attending public. Questions were asked, to which the speakers gave qualified answers. Both books were well received by the listeners.

At the end of the thematic session, Academician-Secretary of the Department of Environmental Protection and Forestry Sciences, Academician L. Dolidze thanked the attending public for coming and active involvement in the work of the session.

Session of the Scientific Council at the Presidium of the Academy of Agricultural Sciences of Georgia

On March 19, 2024, a session of the Scientific Council under the Presidium of the Academy was held in the conference hall of the Georgian Academy of Agricultural Sciences.

Academician Jemal Gugushvili, the Deputy Chairman of the Scientific Council, introduced the agenda of the session to the audience, according to which a report was heard on the topic: "Modern state of veterinary medicine and measures to improve it". Academician Tengiz Kurashvili was the speaker, Professor Giuli Gogol, Doctor of Agricultural Sciences, co-speaker.

Academician T. Kurashvili spoke at length about the situation in the animal stalls. It was noted that in Georgia there are rare animal stalls that fully meet veterinary and sanitary requirements. Often they are primitively built, manure carriers and farm waste storages are unorganized, cleaning is incomplete and of poor quality, disinfections, disinsections and deratizations are not carried out, which violates all requirements necessary for the care and maintenance of animals. Accordingly, the temperature regime, humidity, lighting are violated, the concentration of harmful gases increases, etc. The conditions in the stalls contribute to the accumulation of pathogens: bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasite eggs and larvae over the years, which in many cases leads to the emergence of infectious and invasive diseases. The resistance (endurance) of the animal's organism decreases against the background of all this processes. Produced animal products and raw materials are of poor quality and often dangerous for human health. Accordingly, improving the health of animals, providing them with the necessary care and storage conditions contributes not only to the increase in the production of animal products, but also to obtaining high-quality products, which in turn is significantly related to the joint implementation of technological, technical and organizational-economic measures. Professor Giuli Gogol spoke about abiove-mentioned problems.

After the reports, a discussion was held, in which the attending public was actively involved. Professor Ioseb Sarjveladze, Doctor of Veterinary Sciences Davit Goderdzishvili, Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Nikoloz Zazashvili and others expressed their opinions on the issues. It was noted that it is necessary to create a commission by the relevant services, which will study the situation in the animal stalls, and will draw up various measures to correct it.

Academician Jemal Gugushvili, the deputy chairman of the scientific council, summarized the work of the scientific council.

Meeting of the Commission for Agrarian Innovations

On March 13 of this year, a meeting of the Commission for Agrarian Innovations was held in the meeting hall of the Academy of Agricultural Sciences, at which Tamaz Bichiashvili, a full professor of electrical and computer engineering at the Agrarian University of Georgia, gave a report: "Phytotester - a portable tool for express diagnosis of the physiological state of plants and its practical use". The speaker noted that modern studies and practices of horticulture are unthinkable without obtaining objective information from the plant, using instrumental methods and technical means of "dialogue" with the plant. It is generally recognized that plant biophysical parameters - active and passive bioelectrical potentials/signals and impedance - are the integral informational parameters characteristic of the physiological processes taking place in the plant.

Dr. T. Bichiashvili created a portable device called "phytotester", which provides measurement-registration of active and passive electrical signals and characteristic impedance parameters of the plant. The device provides two options:

Pocket tester of plant physiological condition;

An intelligent sensor of plant biophysical parameters in the form of a portable adapter to be connected to a smartphone.

The phytotester was used to evaluate the suitability of the grafting components of the vine, as well as to determine the animal behavior of the grafted seedling and for the express diagnosis of the physiological state of the plant root system by biophysical methods.

The main merit of the phytotester is - objective express diagnosis, ease of diagnosis, low price, high accuracy. Anyone can use it. It is worth noting that bioelectrical signals are received from the plant in vegetation, as well as from its separate organs, without violating the biological integrity of the object, with the phytotester.

Phytotester is protected by Georgian patent B 7540 of 2023 and trademark M37256, and the testing methods under the name "Method of determining the physiological state of plants" are protected by Georgian patent U 1937 of 2016.

The following participants took part in the discussion after the presentation: Academician Givi Japaridze, Academician Aleksandre Didebulidze, Professor Otar Karchava, Doctor Gocha Tsofurashvili, Doctor Otar Nadirashvili, Candidate of Sciences Dimitri Kostarov, who positively evaluated the work presented. It was considered expedient to organize a production test in the demonstration plot of the Scientific Research Center of the Ministry of Environment Protection and Agriculture of Georgia in order to accelerate the spread of the mentioned invention in the agricultural field, in which the representatives of the Academy will be actively involved.
