International Day of Forests

March 21 - International Day of Forests

7a96856a 9563 45d8 96f0 116ca777cc76   On March 23, 2026, a Thematic Session dedicated to the International Day of Forests was held in the session hall of Georgian Academy of Agricultural Sciences, organized by the Department of Environmental Protection and Forestry Sciences of the Academy.

The ceremonial session was attended by: Academician - Secretary of the Department of Environmental Protection and Forestry Sciences, Academician Lasha Dolidze, Corresponding Member of the Academy, Acting Director of the Gulisashvili Forestry Institute, Doctor of Forestry, Giorgi Kavtaradze, Department Fellow: Doctor of Agriculture Zviad Tiginashvili, Head of the Academy's Information Center Ketevan Chipashvili, Invited Guests: Professor of Agrarian University, Doctor of Agriculture Medea Burjanadze, and the students of the Georgian Technical University.

The session was opened by Academician - Secretary of the Scientific Department of Environmental Protection and Forestry of the Georgian Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Academician Lasha Dolidze, who noted that the International Day of Forests was established by the 23rd Congress of the UN General Assembly. It is noteworthy that all UN member states, including Georgia, hold various events on this day, the goal of which is to preserve the diversity of forest ecosystems. Then he made a presentation on the topic: “Formation of forest fire hearth and intensities in forest ecosystems - combating the spread processes from the air, using fire-fighting aviation means”. Academician Lasha Dolidze noted that one of the effective means of remote operational monitoring of fire safety and effective means of early warning and monitoring In this regard, the most effective fire-fighting aircraft are: “A N – 2”, “BOMBARDIER CL - 215” type aircraft, light (“M I – 1”, “M I -2”, “K – 26”) and high (“M I – 8”, “M I -2”, “K -32”) load-bearing fire-fighting helicopters, “SESNA - 1 Fr” type glider-aircraft, “EARKRAFFT” type seaplane, etc.

Special aviation means of firefighting (aircraft, helicopters, seaplanes) are actively used to combat the formation and spread of forest fires of various intensities (mainly medium and strong) of low, high and combined groups, in particular in forest ecosystems where, due to difficult natural- conditions or extremely high (+4000C; +7000C) air temperature regimes during forest fires, active action by firefighters and rescuers is restricted.

The Canadian-made "Airkraft - 1 F" high-capacity, fire-fighting aircraft has a 4,500-liter tank and, flying speed of 200 - 220 km/h, sprays a fire extinguishing chemical solution onto the fire sources from the upper space of the forest canopy, namely from a height of 40 - 50 meters, resulting in the formation of a 60 - 70 meter wide and 220 - 250 meter long so-called "water wall", which effectively affects the fire sources and leads to their localization and elimination.

A very interesting discussion was held around the report in question-answer mode.

The session was summarized by Academician Lasha Dolidze, who thanked the audience for coming and noted that such meetings will contribute to the discussion and resolution of current issues related to Georgia's forests in the future.
